What Does a Doula Actually Do? (And How I Support Your Journey)
If you are exploring your options for pregnancy and birth, you’ve likely come across the word "Doula." You might be wondering: Is she a midwife? Does she deliver the baby? What exactly does she do during the birth?
1. The Most Important Distinction: We Are Not Medical Professionals
First and foremost, it’s important to know that a Doula is not a midwife or a doctor. We do not perform clinical tasks like checking blood pressure, monitoring the baby’s heart rate, or delivering the baby.
Instead, think of a midwife as your medical guardian and a Doula as your emotional and physical anchor. We work alongside your medical team to ensure you feel nurtured, informed, and empowered.
3. We Provide Physical Comfort Measures
During labour, I use a "toolkit" of comfort measures to help you manage the intensity of birth. This might include:
• Suggesting different positions to help the baby descend.
• Using light touch, massage, or counter-pressure.
• Creating a "birth sanctuary" with dim lights, aromatherapy, or music.
• Reminding you to stay hydrated and nourished.
4. We Are Your Information Advocate
One of my primary roles is to help you navigate the many choices you’ll face. I provide evidence-based information so that you can make the decisions that feel right for your body and your baby. I help you understand your options, from pain relief to intervention , without judgment, ensuring your voice is heard and respected by your medical team.
5. We Support the Partner, Too!
A common worry is that a Doula will "replace" the partner. In reality, it’s the opposite! I am there to support the partner so they can support you. I can suggest ways for them to be hands-on, give them a break when they need to eat or rest, and provide a calm reassurance that everything is progressing normally.
6. We "Mother the Mother" Postnatally
The support doesn't end when the baby arrives. As a Doula, I help you navigate the "Fourth Trimester." This includes emotional debriefing of your birth story, help with feeding, light housework, and simply holding the baby so you can take a restorative nap or a hot shower.
Why Choose a Doula?
Statistics show that having a Doula can lead to shorter labours, a reduction in the need for interventions, and a significantly more positive birth experience overall.
At Clare’s Gentle Doula Care, my goal is simple: to hold space for you to have a birth experience you will treasure forever.
